Beginners' groups

Do you want to start running but are limited to when the children are at school? Have you tried 'Couch to 5K' but found it hard to motivate yourself? Do you lack any running friends to train together with? Are you nervous about joining a large group of beginners at a running club? Then why not join one of our small beginners' running groups, designed especially for complete beginners like you!

Our beginners' groups are weekly coached running sessions in and around Newark and Lincoln, designed to get you started as a runner. The groups are small, with a maximum of 10 people per session. Over the weeks, we'll help you to:

  • start to run, using a walk/run strategy
  • build up your fitness and endurance
  • build up your confidence
  • have fun
  • understand more about running kit, nutrition, hydration and recovery
  • understand what you can do to prevent injury

In addition to the weekly coaching, you'll have access to a closed Facebook group, where you can share stories and successes, pick up running tips and get answers to any questions you have.

Frequently asked questions:

I've not run since I was at school and I really am unfit. Is your beginners' group really suitable for me? Yes! We expect people to be complete beginners and we plan our sessions accordingly.

I don't have any running clothes. Does that matter? No, you don't need any special kit to take part. Wear clothes that are comfortable to move about in and bear in mind that you might get quite warm, especially in summer. A t-shirt and leggings will be fine to get you started. On your feet, wear the most comfortable trainers / sports shoes you have; wear them with socks, as we don't want you getting blisters.

Should I bring something to eat and drink? Bring a bottle of water that you can sip when needed during the session. We'll be having recovery / drinks breaks. You probably won't feel like eating during the session but you might want to bring a snack to have afterwards.

What happens if it rains? Unless there is a really terrible storm, we'll carry on. You can bring a jacket to put on just in case.

Can I just come for one or two sessions when I am able to? If you really want to become a runner, consistency is important - the more you come, the more you will improve.  If you can really only make very occasional sessions, you would be better off to contact us for a discussion about what else we can offer you.
